eye_doc 2025. 4. 21. 19:51๐ Retinal Changes in Pregnancy – What’s New, What Worsens, and What Tests Are Safe?
Pregnancy affects the eye not only through hypertensive disorders like pre-eclampsia,
but also by triggering new retinal diseases or exacerbating pre-existing ones.
Additionally, diagnostic procedures must be evaluated for fetal safety.

โ Retinal Diseases Newly Triggered During Pregnancy
DiseaseDetails
| CSC | Unilateral, 3rd trimester, resolves postpartum, subretinal exudates common |
| Serous RD in DIC | Self-limiting, minor pigment changes after resolution |
| Uveal Melanoma | Hormone-driven melanin increase, malignant potential uncertain |
โ Pregnancy-Induced Changes in Existing Conditions
DiseasePregnancy Impact
| Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) | Worsens with poor glycemic control, DME may increase |
| Toxoplasmosis | No transmission risk to fetus from maternal ocular lesions |
| VKH | Exacerbation in 1st trimester |
| Behcet’s Disease | Worsens postpartum |
| High Myopia | No added risk of retinal detachment during delivery |
| Choroidal Hemangioma | May grow rapidly during pregnancy |
| RPE dystrophy | Can worsen suddenly during pregnancy |
โ Diagnostic Test Safety in Pregnancy
TestSafety
| Fluorescein Angiography (FAG) | Crosses placenta → use only if essential |
| ICG Angiography | Does not cross placenta → safe |
| Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) | Avoid – verteporfin safety in pregnancy unknown |
