Diagnosis and surgical repair of traumatic injury to the lacrimal canaliculi (lacrimal canaliculus)
eye_doc 2025. 4. 20. 14:29👁 Canalicular Laceration – Tear Duct Injury Repair Guide
The lacrimal canaliculus runs along the eyelid margin and is vulnerable to trauma.
Even minor injuries can cause tear duct disruption, requiring surgical repair to prevent chronic epiphora.
🧵 Surgical Workflow Summary
StepDetails
① Locate proximal cut end | Use light probe or dye; general anesthesia preferred |
② Insert silicone tube | Choose Monoka (single) or Bika (double) type |
③ Suture canalicular wall | Around the inserted stent |
④ Address medial canthal tendon | If also injured, repair accordingly |
✅ Surgical Tips
- Delay repair 24–48 hours post-trauma (unless animal bite)
- Upper canaliculus only? Still worth repairing
- Choose stent type based on case: Monoka = easier, Bika = more stable
